NEW YORK, NY, USA - The 2017 US Open is about to reach its grand finale as a pair of young American stars compete for their maiden major title.
Countrywomen and lifelong friends Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens will go head-to-head in Saturday's final that promises a contrast in style and parallels in career arc.
Both women made their major breakthroughs by reaching the Australian Open semifinals - Stephens in 2013, Keys in 2015. Both suffered career-derailing injuries during the 2016 off-season - Stephens with foot surgery, Keys with wrist surgery. Both have enjoyed stellar summar surges, where Stephens reached back-to-back Premier 5 semifinals at the Rogers Cup and the Western & Southern Open, while Keys won her first WTA hardcourt title at the Bank of the West Classic over fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe.
