No.4 seed Timea Babos of Hungary is the only seeded player to advance to the singles semifinals in Taipei City. The Australian Open women's doubles champions have each moved into the semifinals at separate tournaments this week, as Babos' partner in Melbourne, Kristina Mladenovic, has also reached the final four in St. Petersburg as she attempts to defend her title.

Sabine Lisicki is attempting to make her first WTA final since defeating then-World No.42 Karolina Pliskova for the title in Hong Kong in 2014. The 2013 Wimbledon runner-up from Germany is currently ranked outside the Top 200, having suffered through multiple periods of absence due to injury.
