NEW YORK, NY, USA - At the start of the tournament, eight women had a chance to leave the US Open with the No.1 ranking. After three days, that number dropped to six. Despite her opening-round loss to Maria Sharapova, World No.2 Simona Halep remains in the hunt for the No.1 ranking. The same can't be said for Caroline Wozniacki and Johanna Konta after both women bowed out early.

Halep's loss does add some clarity to the No.1 scenarios for current No.1 Karolina Pliskova, Garbiñe Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, Venus Williams, and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Here's how the Battle for No.1 shapes up with the first round of the US Open in the books:

Despite her opening-round loss, Simona Halep can move to No.1 after the US Open if none of the below happen:

- Muguruza reaches the Round of 16

- Svitolina reaches the semifinal

- Pliskova reaches the final

- Kuznetsova or Venus win the title

Reigning Wimbledon champion and World No.3 Garbiñe Muguruza needs to reach the Round of 16 in order to have a chance of moving to No.1. She plays Magdalena Rybarikova in the third round.

World No.4 Elina Svitolina needs to reach the semifinals in order to have a chance of moving to No.1. If Muguruza reaches the quarterfinal then Svitolina would need to reach the final in order to have a shot at No.1. Svitolina plays Evgeniya Rodina in the second round.

Current No.1 Karolina Pliskova needs to reach the final in order to extend her stay at the top of the WTA Rankings; however, if Muguruza advances to the semifinals, then Pliskova would need to win the title. If Muguruza makes the final, Pliskova would no longer have a chance at moving to No.1. Pliskova plays Nicole Gibbs in the second round.

World No.8 Svetlana Kuznetsova needs to win the title in order to have a chance at moving to No.1. Kuznetsova would no longer have a shot at No.1 if any of the following happen:

- Muguruza reaches the semifinal

- Pliskova reaches the semifinal

- Svitolina reaches the final

Kuznetsova plays Kurumi Nara in the second round.

World No.9 Venus Williams needs to win the title in order to have a shot at moving to No.1. However, if any of the following happen, she will no longer have a chance to move to No.1:

- Muguruza reaches the Round of 16

- Svitolina reaches the quarterfinals

- Pliskova reaches the final

Venus plays Maria Sakkari in the third round.

Note: This post has been updated to reflect Wozniacki's loss to Ekaterina Makarova in the second round on Wednesday night.
