WASHINGTON DC, USA - Simona Halep and Sloane Stephens have accepted main draw wildcards into the Citi Open, kicking off their summer hardcourt swing at the WTA International event.
Halep will be making her debut in DC after a stellar European season that saw her defend her Mutua Madrid Open, reach the finals of both the Internazionali BNL d'Italia and Roland Garros, and reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where she came within two points of becoming WTA World No.1.
The World No.2 had a successful US Open Series last summer, winning the Rogers Cup in Montréal and pushing then-No.1 Serena Williams to three tough sets in the US Open quarterfinals.
Stephens is on the comeback trail after spending nearly a year off after a foot surgery. The American won her maiden WTA title in Washington, DC back in 2015, beating Samantha Stosur and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in back-to-back matches.
The American played her first match of the season at Wimbledon, and is currently playing Mylan World TeamTennis for the Philadelphia Freedoms.
