MATCH POINTS

Defending champion Hsieh Su-wei returns to Hiroshima as the top seed, taking on Japanese wildcard Risa Ozaki. A year ago, Hsieh won her first WTA title in six years at the first edition of the event to be held in Hiroshima, beating American teenager Amanda Anisimova in the final.

Canadian teenager and junior French Open winner Leylah Annie Fernandez makes her third career WTA main draw appearance after successfully qualifying, and her first outside of Canada. The 17-year-old previously featured as a wildcard in Quebec City in 2018, and in Toronto earlier this summer.

Seeded players went a perfect 3-0 on Monday, as Veronika Kudermetova, Alison van Uytvanck and Zarina Diyas all recorded wins. In addition to Hsieh, the other four seeded players, No. 4 Anastasia Potapova, No. 5 Tatjana Maria, No. 7 Sara Sorribes Tormo and No. 8 Laura Siegemund are all in action.

After successfully qualifying, 37-year-old Junri Namigata will play her first WTA main draw match in over a year, as she takes on compatriot Misaki Doi. On the other end of the spectrum, 21-year-old wildcard Ayano Shimizu will be playing just her WTA main draw match, taking on Patricia Maria Tig.
