Four-time Abierto GNP Seguros champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova improved her win-loss record at the event to an astounding 23-2 after her 6-0, 6-3 first-round victory over Anna Blinkova on Tuesday. She and Ivana Jorovic will meet for the first time.

2016 Monterrey finalist Kirsten Flipkens and Dalila Jakupovic played each other for the first time earlier this year, in Hobart. Flipkens won that match, 6-4, 7-5.

Last year's semifinalist Sachia Vickery upset her 4th-seeded compatriot Alison Riske in the first round on Tuesday. Vickery takes a 1-0 head-to-head lead into her match with Nao Hibino, with the American's victory coming in Toronto qualifying in 2017.

Magdalena Rybarikova will square off against Stefanie Voegele for the first time. Former Top 20 player Rybarikova has reached the Monterrey quarterfinals three times: in 2014, 2015, and last year. She lost in the quarterfinals last year to Vickery.
