Serena Williams just won her sixth Australian Open title and 19th Grand Slam crown - for that reason she has been named January's WTA Player Of The Month.

Serena Williams entered the Australian Open like she does every tournament, the heavy favorite, although it had been five years since she had her hands on the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

After a tough road to the final, dropping a set to WTA Rising Stars Elina Svitolina and Garbiñe Muguruza in the third and fourth rounds, Williams was safely back in the final. There she defeated Maria Sharapova, 6-3, 7-6(5), to capture her sixth Australian Open crown.

It was her 19th Grand Slam title, passing Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert's 18. Williams now stands just three Grand Slam titles away from tying Steffi Graff's Open Era record of 22.

Following the Australian Open Williams debuted at No.1 on the first Road To Singapore leaderboard of 2015.

For that reason, Williams has been named January's WTA Player Of The Month.

What were her thoughts on possibly reaching Graf's 22 Grand Slam titles?

"I would love to get to 22 Grand Slams. I mean, 19 was very difficult to get to. It took me 33 years to get here, so... I would love to get there. But I have to get to 20 first, and then I have to get to 21. There are so many wonderful young players coming up, so it will be a very big task. My goal was just to get to 19. I didn't think it would happen this fast, honestly, but it feels really good."
