Petra Kvitova can't wait for June every year. Why? It's the only time of year on grass courts. A surface perfect for her big hitting powerful game.
Kvitova entered Wimbledon withdrawing from Eastbourne the prior week for pre-cautionary reasons. Fans and media were wondering if the 2011 champion would be fit to compete in the third Grand Slam of the year.
After an easy opening two matches, Kvitova played five-time champion Venus Williams in a thrilling three set match, which she eventually prevailed, 5-7, 7-6(2), 7-5. Kvitova did not drop a set en route to the final where she faced WTA Rising Star Eugenie Bouchard. Kvitova routed Bouchard, 6-3, 6-0. It was the fewest games dropped in a Wimbledon final since 1992. It was also Kvitova's second Wimbledon crown.
For that reason, Kvitova has been named the WTA Player Of The Month for June.
What were her thoughts on winning again?
"I can't say that it's more special than when I won my first Wimbledon title, but after three years, to stand here with the trophy again is so amazing."
Kvitova also jumped 11 spots to fifth place on the Road To Singapore leaderboard for the season-ending BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
